NAVLE Retake Policy

Repeating candidates who have taken the NAVLE at least three times since the fall 2007 testing window should consider the NBVME NAVLE Retake Policy in determining their eligibility for reapplication.

NAVLE Application Process - Two Applications Required

All NAVLE candidates must submit TWO applications and be approved by a licensing entity to take the examination.

APPLICATION #1: Submit the national NBVME NAVLE application and corresponding fee by the deadline date.

The NAVLE fee is non-refundable. However, if you apply for the NAVLE and subsequently decide you do not want to take the examination, a refund will be considered if you contact the NBVME before your name is submitted to the test vendor, which is typically in mid-August for the November-December NAVLE and mid-January for the April NAVLE. Also, if you do not receive NAVLE approval from your licensing board, your fee will be refunded.
Submit your NBVME application according to the licensing board preferences and deadlines noted in the application procedure chart below.
- Candidates applying through the Canadian National Examining Board (NEB), the Puerto Rico Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and the Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine must submit their NBVME application and payment directly to their board (not to the NBVME), by the board's application deadline date.
- All other candidates may submit the NBVME application directly to the NBVME, either on-line or by paper application. On-line application fees can be paid by Visa or MasterCard. Paper application fees can be paid by check, cashier's check, or certified check or money order, payable in U.S. funds. The deadline for RECEIPT of the application in the NBVME office is August 1 for the November-December NAVLE, and January 3 for the April NAVLE.
When completing the NBVME application, you must enter your name exactly as it appears on the government-issued photo identification you plan on presenting at the testing center on the day of your examination. That information is used in producing your NAVLE Scheduling Permit, and your Permit name and ID name must match exactly or you will not be admitted into the testing center.
You must provide a reliable e-mail address on your NBVME application, and should check your e-mail regularly, because important information regarding the NAVLE and NAVLE Scheduling Permits will be conveyed to candidates via e-mail correspondence.

APPLICATION #2: Submit a state/territorial NAVLE application and corresponding fee through ONE licensing entity by that board's application deadline date.

The licensing entity through which you apply to take the NAVLE must approve your application, and notify the NBVME of that approval, for you to be eligible to sit for the NAVLE.
Submit your state/territorial NAVLE application and payment according to the licensing board preferences and deadlines noted in the application procedure chart below.
- Candidates should receive a copy of the NAVLE Bulletin of Information for Candidates from the licensing board through which they are applying to take the NAVLE. This Bulletin of Information is also available in pdf and electronic format on this site.
- If you are applying through the California Board and meet ALL the following criteria:
  - You are a senior student at an AVMA accredited school
  - AND you intend to submit your NBVME NAVLE application by PAPER (rather than on-line)
  - AND you wish to grant consent for release of your NAVLE score information to your veterinary school

then you must download the PDF consent statement below and include it with your paper application submission. Both the paper NBVME NAVLE application and the consent statement should be mailed to the NBVME office at: P.O. Box 1356, Bismarck, ND 58502

California Waiver Page - Consent Statement

If you are a candidate with a documented disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) wanting to test with special accommodations, you must contact the licensing board through which you are seeking NAVLE approval to obtain information regarding procedures and accommodation documentation requirements before you apply for the NAVLE. Documentation must be provided to the licensing board prior to, or at the time of, submission of your NAVLE application. It takes time to review the documentation necessary to approve test accommodations, so submitting your application and accommodation materials early is encouraged. This allows time for you to submit any additionally requested documentation necessary for approval of your request, prior to the application deadline date. All requests for accommodations must be approved by your licensing board and the NBVME. See the NAVLE Candidate Bulletin for more information.
Be aware that a licensing board's NAVLE application deadline may be different than their licensure application deadline. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) maintains a database of all state licensing board requirements: AAVSB Directory of Veterinary Licensing Requirements.

It is your responsiblity to make sure both the NBVME and your licensing board office have received all the necessary application paperwork and fees by their deadlines in order for you to be registered and approved to take the NAVLE.

Each licensing board sets its own NAVLE application and fee payment procedures, and application deadlines. Please refer to the table below for information on submission of your NBVME and state/territorial NAVLE applications.

If you are applying through a state identified with an asterisk * you must submit both your NBVME and state NAVLE applications directly to the NBVME office. NAVLE Scheduling Permits and Prometric Testing Centers

Starting with the November-December 2010 NAVLE administration, approved NAVLE candidates will access and print their Scheduling Permits on-line. The NBVME will no longer mail paper Scheduling Permits to candidates, as was done in the past.

All NAVLE candidates will be required to provide an e-mail address on their NBVME NAVLE application. Candidates who are approved by a licensing board to take the NAVLE will receive and e-mail message from the NBVME approximately 45 days prior to the opening of the testing window, outlining instructions on how to access, download and print their individual Scheduling Permit via the internet link provided.

Candidates with documented disabilities who have been granted test accommodations will have special information on their Scheduling Permits.

If you have not received an e-mail message from the NBVME regarding the on-line availability of your Scheduling Permit by September 30 for the November-December NAVLE, and February 28 for the April NAVLE, notify the NBVME immediately.

Access the URL provided in the NBVME e-mail instructions and print your Scheduling Permit. All candidates must print their Scheduling Permit and have it with them on the day they take their NAVLE. Permits must be printed in advance, because they can not be printed at the testing center on the day you take your NAVLE, and the NBVME will not provide a faxed copy.
Schedule your testing appointment through Prometric as soon as you download and print your Permit in order to get the date and center you prefer. You can locate a testing center at: www.prometric.com.
- Select the following options on the Prometric web site 'For Test Takers' area when scheduling your testing appointment on-line:
  - Test type = Academic, Professional, Government & Corporate
    From the dropdown menu you must select "National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners"
  - Once these options are selected, you can follow the Prometric prompts to schedule your testing appointment.
Record your Prometric confirmation number in the designated area on the bottom of your printed Scheduling Permit at the time you schedule your testing appointment. The NBVME does not have access to this confirmation number and you will need it later to confirm your appointment.

Confirm your testing appointment with Prometric one week prior to your testing date, using the confirmation number issued by Prometric when you origianlly scheduled your appointment.
Arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to your appointment with your non-expired government-issued photo identification AND your printed Scheduling Permit. You will not be admitted to the test center if you do not have your Scheduling Permit with you, or if your ID is expired. The first and last names on your ID and Permit must exactly match, or you will not be admitted for testing.

NAVLE Score Reports and Score Transfers

Your initial NAVLE score will be reported to the board through which you applied to take the examination, at no additional cost to you. Your licensing board is responsible for mailing your score report to you. Scores for the November-December testing window are reported in late January, and scores for the April testing window are reported in mid-May.

Transfers of NAVLE scores to additional licensing boards are handled through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) office. Score transfers are not processed by the NBVME. To request a transfer of your NAVLE scores you should contact the Veterinary Information Verifying Agency (VIVA) of the AAVSB. Score transfers can be processed through the VIVA link on the AAVSB website. The VIVA office can also be contacted by telephone toll free at: 877-798-VIVA; or by e-mail at: info@aavsb.org.
